From Setbacks to Success: Miami Clothing Company at Art Basel 2024
Share
Introduction:
Art Basel 2024 was a wild ride for Miami Clothing Company. As an entrepreneur, I’m no stranger to challenges, but this weekend pushed me to the edge and reminded me why I love what I do. From missed flights and forgotten essentials to moments of connection and triumph, the grind never stopped.
This blog is a behind-the-scenes look at my experience during Art Basel 2024. I’m breaking it down day by day—the setbacks, the breakthroughs, and the lessons learned along the way. Whether you’re chasing a dream or just curious about the hustle behind Miami Clothing Company, this story is for you.
Thursday: A Rough Start
My weekend didn’t start as planned. I missed my 6 a.m. flight from New York to Miami and had to rebook for 9:45 a.m. with a $75 JetBlue fee. Not ideal, but manageable.
When I finally arrived at FLL, things got worse—I lost my favorite winter jacket while heading to my car rental. It was a small but frustrating loss, especially since I loved that jacket.
Despite the hiccups, I made it to my accommodation and then headed to the Shoe Gallery to check on the collection. The staff gave me some great news: most of the shirts were sold out, with only two left and a few shorts remaining. That was a big win and a morale boost I needed after the rough start to my day.
Friday: Hustling in Wynwood
The day started with a setback. I went to pick up my partner from the airport, only to find out she’d forgotten our best-selling hats. I knew it was going to be another challenging day.
After regrouping, we set out for the Design District to set up a pop-up shop. Unfortunately, we were asked to leave almost immediately. It was a blow to my plans, but I didn’t let it stop me. I quickly pivoted and decided to set up just outside the Design District under a bridge. The spot had great foot traffic as it connected Midtown to the Design District.
Things started off well. I made a few sales, and people passing by showed love for the hustle. But then, a passerby suggested I head to Wynwood, where the crowd was larger. I trusted my gut and went for it—bad move.
As I was unloading the car in Wynwood, I accidentally hit the panic button on my car keys, setting off the alarm. In the chaos of turning it off, I left the keys in the car and locked myself out. My products, table, and chairs were all stuck inside. Defeated, I called a locksmith, who arrived quickly but charged $85—another unexpected expense.
When I finally got set up, the foot traffic in Wynwood was great, but sales were slow. However, the exposure was incredible, and I connected with some amazing people. The police allowed me to stay for a few hours before eventually shutting me down. Even then, they showed respect for my hustle and complimented my clothing, which was a small win in itself.
That night, I sat in my car for 20 minutes, reflecting on the day. I needed to pivot and make the most of the weekend.
Saturday: Turning It Around
I woke up at 5:30 a.m. and headed to Bal Harbour Beach for a run. The fresh air and sunrise gave me clarity and renewed energy. I spent some time speaking with God, meeting locals, and discovering a nearby market.
Later, I reached out to Chad Ochocinco, a long-time supporter of Miami Clothing Company. He responded immediately, and we linked up for a quick photo with the collection. The post gained attention and added to the momentum of the day.
Next, I stopped by the Shoe Gallery to connect with Danny, who shared positive feedback about the brand and placed another order for the cutoff tees, which had sold out. Hearing that my products were doing well was a major confidence boost.
I wrapped up the day with a delicious lunch at Boteco, a Brazilian spot near the Shoe Gallery. Afterward, I returned to my place to focus on my schoolwork—3 assignments due before midnight for my Computer Science degree at FIU. Balancing school and business is tough, but I was determined to stay on top of everything.
Sunday: A Surreal Moment
Sunday started on a high note. I headed back to the Design District to shoot some promo photos. The shots came out amazing, and I even got a reel with Highsnobiety in the backdrop. It was great to connect with people, and I made a few sales on the spot.
The highlight of my day came at the Dolphins vs. Jets game. I arrived late due to traffic, but as I was scanning my ticket, I spotted a kid wearing the Miami Clothing Company twill hat. Seeing someone rocking something I designed was a surreal and humbling moment that I’ll never forget.
After the game, I went back to my roots, selling hats around the stadium. This is how Miami Clothing Company started, and it’s still one of my favorite ways to connect with people and introduce them to the brand.
Final Thoughts:
Art Basel 2024 was a mix of challenges, wins, and unforgettable moments. From being shut down in Wynwood to reconnecting with Ochocinco and seeing my designs worn in the wild, the weekend reminded me why I do what I do.
The feedback and support I received keep me motivated to push harder. Miami Clothing Company is just getting started, and I can’t wait to see what’s next.
